Microlight (flex wing) lessons

At Airways Airsports Microlight School we offer air experience flights and microlight courses using two different kinds of microlight – flexwing and fixed wing. A microlight is a small, light aircraft with a maximum take-off weight of under 450 kg.

Flexwing microlights have a "hang glider” shaped wing with a trike unit below, containing the engine, seats and landing gear.  Flexwings are open cockpit aircraft, exposed to the elements, with either two seats (passenger seated behind the pilot) or a single seat. They are steered by the pilot moving the trike unit from side to side and forward and aft.

All our microlight instructors are flying enthusiasts and you will really enjoy your experience of microlighting at Airways Airsports, whether you come for a single microlight lesson or a full microlight course.

If you want to buy something special for a birthday or other celebration, why not treat them to a microlight experience?  You can choose from a range of options among our Gift Vouchers

Who Can Fly?

Almost everyone is the answer! Maximum pilot weight is 90 Kg, the minimum age is 14. Solo flights can be made from age 16, and a licence can be held from 17.  There is no maximum age - one of our students, Eric, acheived his microlight licence on his 80th birthday!

If you have a mobility problem, it is almost certain you can still fly with us.  We specialise in taking people with disabilities flying - if you want to fly, we will do our best to make it happen. Just give us a ring to discuss your individual needs.

Training

To fly a microlight aircraft you need a National Private Pilots Licence (NPPL), with ‘Microlight’ type rating.   This is gained by doing a microlight course with a qualified instructor at a microlight school, in accordance with a CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) syllabus of training.

The requirements to get the microlight licence are:

  • minimum of 25 hours total flying time including 10 hours solo
  • two qualifying cross country flights of 40 nautical miles.
  • a General Flying Test,
  • an oral exam
  • 5 multiple-choice exams:
                                         Principles of flight,
                                         Air law,
                                         Navigation,
                                         Meteorology
                                         Human factors

Microlight training courses and costs

Your microlight training can be done in a way to suit you.  The pre-paid lesson rate gives you a discount on the standard hourly rate when you purchase a pack of 5 lessons. Whether you are starting from scratch, getting back into flying, or need a little extra confidence building, we can make a programme to suit you. Training can be as little as £80 per hour when using your own aircraft.

Microlight (flex wing) - Single Seat Deregulated

Single Seat De-Regulation (SSDR) has opened up access to many wonderful flying machines to the solo microlight licence holder.  There is the possibility of further cross-credit routes to a microlight licence from hang glider and paraglider power ratings.
